#4 – Icons and the Mother of God

This month is the aniversary of the II Council of Nicea in 787. In this episode of Catholic: Under The Hood, I look back at that council, at some shocking parts of Church history, and why the council’s decisions remain important for us today.

I also open a new segment of the show called “In The Icon Corner”, looking at the famous icon of Our Lady of Vladimir. Plus there’s a great song by Kevin Reeves called “Shine” which is available from the Podsafe Music Network.

You can find further information about the II Council of Nicea in the Catholic Encyclopedia and can find the documents of II Nicea in the Medieval Sourcebook.

If you are interested in getting a copy of the icon of Our Lady of Vladimir for your own private prayer. You can purchase one from the Saint Isaac of Syria Skete.

Feel free to leave comments about the episode or you can e-mail me with comments to seraphimtor@hotmail.com

Franciscan Praying Places

Welcome to Catholic:Under The Hood podcast

Journey with me in an adventure through the Catholic faith and the perils of modern technology.

I’m here at Franciscan University and will be talking about issues of spirituality, theology and perhaps even the Chicago Cubs.

#1 – Praying the Jesus Prayer

In the first episode, I start testing out all this technology and talk a bit about the Jesus Prayer.

The Jesus Prayer is an ancient Eastern Christian prayer used to center our attention upon the Saving Lord and to fulfill the mandate of the New Testament that we pray always. You can find more information about the Jesus Prayer in the following books:

Irenee Hausherr’s “The Name of Jesus”
“The Pilgrim’s Tale” and “The Way of a Pilgrim”

You can order your own chotki [Eastern prayer rope] via The Icon and Book Service.

The opening and closing instrumental of Lasst Uns Erfruen is thanks to Lea Nicholson.
